ENDODONTICS CONSULTATION STELLENBOSCH
Endodontics Treatments
An endodontic consultation is a specialised dental assessment focused on diagnosing and treating issues within the tooth’s pulp. This essential visit helps determine the best course of action to save a damaged tooth and maintain long-term oral health. Our endodontist will carefully evaluate your condition and provide a personalised treatment plan, guiding you through every step of the process.
What Is an Endodontics Consultation?
Endodontics is a specialised field of dentistry dedicated to diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the dental pulp—the soft tissue inside the tooth. Our approach prioritises preventative care over immediate extraction, aiming to preserve your natural tooth whenever possible. During your consultation, we assess whether a root canal or another endodontic treatment is the best option to restore and maintain your oral health.

How Does an Endodontics Consultation Work?
Your dental history plays a crucial role in developing a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Any previous treatments, symptoms, or concerns provide valuable insights for our endodontist.

During your consultation, we begin with a thorough examination of the affected tooth and surrounding gums. At Dorp Street Dental, we use advanced digital X-rays and, if necessary, a 3D scan to gain a complete understanding of the issue. These detailed images help us accurately diagnose any infection or damage within the tooth’s pulp.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, your endodontist will discuss the recommended treatment options, outlining the procedure, expected outcomes, and associated costs. In some cases, treatment may begin during the same appointment.
Benefits of an Endodontics Consultation
Accurate Diagnosis of Tooth Pain
Tooth pain can be complex and challenging to pinpoint. Our endodontists specialise in diagnosing and treating pain related to dental pulp and root canal issues, ensuring you receive the most effective treatment for lasting relief.
Prevents Tooth Loss
One of the key benefits of endodontic treatment, such as a root canal, is that it helps preserve your natural tooth, preventing the need for extraction. At Dorp Street Dental, we prioritise tooth preservation to maintain oral function, support jawbone health, and retain a natural smile.
Long-Lasting Results
Endodontic treatments provide a permanent solution to damaged or infected teeth. A root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime with proper care, eliminating the need for extractions or replacements.
Cost-Effective in the Long Run
While a root canal may seem like a significant upfront cost, it is a more affordable option in the long term. Saving your natural tooth helps you avoid costly alternatives like tooth extractions, dental implants, or bridges.
Comfortable and Pain-Free Procedure
Modern endodontic techniques make root canal treatments highly efficient and virtually painless. We use advanced numbing methods and anaesthesia to ensure a comfortable experience. Your dentist will also discuss any additional comfort measures during your consultation.

FAQs About an Endodontics Consultation
What are the signs of needing an endodontic consultation?
You would see an endodontist if you have severe tooth pain, deep infection, or tooth pulp or root damage.
How much does an endodontics consultation cost?
It's advisable to contact the clinic directly for detailed information. Please refer to the Dorp Street Dental pricing page for the most accurate and up-to-date pricing information.
Will I need a root canal after my consultation?
Based on the exam and X-rays, the endodontist will determine whether a root canal is necessary. You may not need one if another treatment can resolve the issue.
What Happens During Endodontic Treatment?
If a root canal or other endodontic treatment is required, we ensure your comfort by using topical anaesthetic followed by local anaesthetic to numb the tooth. We use specialised numbing techniques to guarantee a pain-free experience.
A protective sheath called a rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep it dry and bacteria-free. A small opening is then made in the tooth to access the root canal system. This intricate network of tiny canals is thoroughly cleaned and shaped using specialised instruments and disinfectants. The root canal is then filled with an antibacterial paste and sealed with a temporary filling.

At a follow-up appointment, the temporary filling is removed, and the canals are flushed with disinfectants before being permanently sealed with Gutta Percha, a rubber-based material that prevents reinfection. In many cases, a permanent restoration—such as a crown—is recommended to protect the tooth from further damage and restore its function and appearance.
