What are Dentures?

Dentures are an easy-to-remove alternative for missing teeth. Dentures replace missing teeth and restore the function and appearance of your smile. They are custom-made to fit your mouth and can replace some or all of your teeth.

We offer two types of dentures: partial dentures and full top and bottom dentures. Partial dentures are useful if you have natural teeth remaining, and full top and bottom dentures replace all the teeth in both the upper and lower jaw.

The Dentures Procedure

Initial Consultation

Your dentist will evaluate your oral health and determine whether full top and bottom or partial dentures are the best option for you. If teeth need to be extracted, a treatment plan is created accordingly.

Impressions

They will then take an impression of your teeth. A dental impression is a hollow mould of the teeth and surrounding oral tissues used to create an exact model of your mouth.

Adjustments

A model of your teeth is made to allow adjustments before the final dentures are fabricated. Your dentist will check the fit, alignment, and appearance to ensure a natural look and feel.

Final Denture Fabrication

The final dentures are crafted using high-quality plastic or metal reinforcements, depending on whether the procedure is for partial or full dentures.

Adjustments

Your completed dentures are placed in your mouth, and the dentist ensures they fit correctly. Minor adjustments are made to prevent discomfort. You’ll receive instructions on wearing, cleaning, and caring for your dentures.

Follow-Up Appointments

A follow-up visit is scheduled to check for fit issues. Over time, additional relines or adjustments may be needed to maintain comfort and effectiveness.

Benefits of Dentures

Restores Chewing Ability

Dentures restore your ability to chew food properly, improving digestion and overall nutrition. Harder foods become easier to eat with well-fitted dentures.

Improves Speech

Missing teeth can cause speech difficulties — dentures help restore proper tongue and lip positioning, allowing for clearer speech.

Enhances Facial Appearance

Tooth loss can cause your facial muscles to sag.  Dentures support facial muscles, maintaining a fuller facial structure.

Boosts Self-Confidence

Restoring your complete, natural-looking smile enhances self-esteem. Modern dentures are designed to closely resemble natural teeth.

Affordable Tooth Replacement Option

Dentures are a more cost-effective solution for replacing multiple missing teeth compared to dental implants. Various types of dentures allow you to choose a customised solution based on your budget and needs.

Easy to Maintain

Dentures can be easily removed for cleaning, helping maintain oral hygiene.

Prevents Further Oral Health Issues

Missing teeth can cause neighbouring teeth to shift, leading to bite problems. Opting for partial dentures can help maintain proper tooth alignment.

Provides a Non-Surgical Alternative to Implants

If you are not a candidate for dental implants due to health concerns or bone loss, dentures offer a non-invasive solution that is just as effective.

FAQs About Dentures

What are the signs that I need Dentures?

Tooth loss affecting your eating or speaking ability is a significant sign. Loose teeth or chronic tooth pain, often caused by gum disease or bone loss, can also indicate that dentures may be necessary.

How much do Dentures cost?

Dorp Street Dental offers a range of denture options, pricing based on the number of teeth replaced and additional features selected. You can visit our website for more detailed information or to schedule a consultation.

How many hours a day should I wear my dentures?

New denture wearers are recommended to wear them for most of the day. Once you have adjusted to your dentures, wearing them for 6-8 hours daily while removing them before sleeping is best.

What is the lifespan of my dentures?

Traditional dentures typically last 5 to 10 years, though they may need periodic adjustments or relining to maintain a good fit.

How long after getting dentures can you eat normally?

It is best to stick to soft foods in the first few days. After one to two weeks, you can begin introducing firmer foods like cooked vegetables and soft meats. You should be able to return to normal eating in one month.

How to care for dentures?

Remove and rinse your dentures after eating to remove food particles. Use a soft-bristle brush and non-abrasive denture cleaner; avoid regular toothpaste, as it can scratch your dentures. You can also soak them overnight in a denture-cleaning solution or water to maintain their shape. Ensure that you rinse them thoroughly before wearing them again.
